We have a new name and logo!

Formerly known as both the National Nikkei Museum & Heritage Centre and Japanese Canadian National Museum, our new name is Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre. For most purposes we will be using “Nikkei Centre” for general activities and for the building as a whole, and “Nikkei National Museum” for museum-specific activities.  It is proposed that we legally change our name to Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre at our upcoming AGM in April. Look for our new signage and materials, and new website, in the coming weeks and months!

HANATARE BOZU BOOK LAUNCH

Saturday, June 2, 3:00pm
Hanatare Bozu: Runny-nosed Brats of Greenwood is a story of Nikkei children living in post-war era in an internment camp town of Greenwood, BC. These children of the ‘50s lived in much simpler times when they had to explore and utilize resources around town to create new games. The first edition sold out even before copies reached the Nikkei National Museum shop. Join us to celebrate the 2nd edition of Hanatare Bozu, which is considerably more detailed and complete with rare photos from the Greenwood Museum and the Fransiscan Sisters Archives, and includes many more humorous anecdotes. Author Chuck Tasaka will be in attendance. The book will be available for $25.

TORN APART – Book reading and signing

Saturday, May 26, 3pm
Join author Susan Aihoshi as she reads from her book Torn Apart – The Internment Diary of Mary Kobayashi. Aihoshi draws from the experiences of her own family during “The Uprooting” of the Japanese in BC during WWII. Through young Mary’s eyes, readers experience this regrettable time in Canadian history firsthand. Aihoshi will present a slide-show of period photos as well as photos taken in the Slocan Valley during her research, plus other photos of interest. Although the book is recommended for ages 8 to 12, the presentation is designed for all ages. We encourage parents and grandparents to attend with their children or grandchildren. Books will be available for purchase, and Susan Aihoshi will sign copies. Continue reading TORN APART – Book reading and signing
