Nikkei Seniors
The Nikkei Seniors Health Care and Housing Society is a non profit charitable organization operating New Sakura-so (independent seniors housing) and Nikkei Home (assisted living). In addition to its operations, the society provides community health related information about and for seniors through the JCCA Bulletin & Geppo.
Our Mission
Independence, respect, dignity, privacy, choice—five cornerstones of adulthood that are too often forgotten when the time comes to face the changes in lifestyle that are a natural part of aging. While many seniors maintain a degree of independence well into their later years, there comes a time when some level of support is needed—with the need generally increasing over time.
At Nikkei Place, two seniors’ residences provide options for seniors with varying degrees of independence.
Nikkei Home is an assisted living apartment building for residents aged 55 and over. While residents have a large degree of independence in day-to-day living, trained, qualified staff offer personal support and care 24 hours a day.
New Sakura-so provides housing complex for independent seniors aged 55 and over, who are able to care for themselves without supervision.
At Nikkei Home residents have access to an array of social programs. An example of a week’s activities are:
Monday – Exercise Group 1; Crib; Exercise Group 2; Knitting; Walking Club
Tuesday – Osteofit; Exercise; Wii Bowling, Bingo
Wednesday – Field Trip to Casino; Exercise Group 1; Exercise Group 2; Card Game; Scrabble; Easy Exercise; Sing-a-long
Thursday – Osteofit; Arts & Crafts; Gospel Church Bible & Tea Time; Field Trip – Lunch; Bilingual Movie Time; Walking Club
Friday – Chairobics; Exercise; Karaoke; Special Program – Diabetes Awareness Day
Saturday – Bingo
At New Sakura-so, seniors are independent. They are volunteers in the fire warden program; welcome committee; special events committees; emergency elevator attendants; and all tenants are invited to attendly tenant meetings.
Programs have been offered through the National Nikkei Museum and Heritage Centre; and through Tonari Gumi.
